SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

The Brookfield Public School District provides special education services for all eligible students in grades K – 12.

Dear Brookfield Families
,
As the new Director of Special Education & Support Services, I would like to welcome you, whether your child has been receiving special services through our department in the past, or this is a new experience for your child and you.

The fields of special education and support services (psychology, social work, nursing, speech and language, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and school counseling) have grown and evolved significantly since the initial laws were passed (in the mid 70s) to provide special education services for our children.
• Best practices in the various disciplines have become, increasingly, research- and evidence-based.
• The philosophical premise has emphasized more inclusion, integration, and coordination between special and regular education.
• We have entered the educational world of SRBI (scientifically research based intervention) and PBS (positive behavioral support) to name only two major state department of education initiatives.
• We more clearly understand the dynamic interplay of neurobiology, learning styles, temperament, environment, and societal factors in the development of a variety of educational disorders with our students.

Equally important, we understand the critical need for collaboration among all of the key stakeholders (families, community, educators, and students). It is imperative that parents and educators form deep and sustainable partnerships around all educational issues but, most importantly, when their child receives special education services or faces other educationally based challenges. We welcome your input, constructive feedback, active collaboration, and support, all of which will be necessary to support and facilitate the growth and progress of all of our students.

I look forward to seeing you at our local special education parent teacher association meetings (SEPTA) or at other venues where I may be helpful to you. Please feel free to speak with any of our dedicated, caring, and committed staff or call me directly (203-775-7748) should you have questions or concerns.
