Children's Sight Word Vocabulary

Center Elementary School and Huckleberry Elementary School use the Fry High Frequency Sight Word List to monitor sight word acquisition. This is not meant to be a definitive list of every word a young reader can read fluently. These lists are instead is meant to be a way to sample children's sight word vocabulary.

We hope that kindergarten children will master 50 words (list 1 and 2) by the end of the school year.

We hope that grade 1 students will master 200 words by the end of the year.

Words are considered fluent if students can:

  1. Read them in any order within 3 seconds without correction
  2. Recognize and read them in multiple contexts
