Summer Reading & Mathematics

Introduction

Summer is a wonderful time for children and families to relax and recharge. The long lazy days of July and August provide time for young children to play and explore the world around them. This play and exploration can be an important part of preparation for academic activities. Encourage your child to engage in activities that allow:

  • Creative problem-solving and decision making (building, non-prescriptive art activities, etc.)
  • Social navigation (board games, neighborhood games, building forts together, etc.)
  • Physical coordination and regulation (free play, hopscotch, swimming, four square, ball games, etc.)
  • Extended attention (pretend play, drama play, sand box play, etc., hobbies)
  • Developing interests over time

Reading

In order to maintain the gains made during the school year it is very important that young children maintain daily reading practice over the summer. This does not have to work against the idea of a fun, relaxing summer! A few minutes of reading each evening, morning, or over a lazy lunchtime will do.   Click here to access Center School Summer Reading Information.

Mathematics

Children are also likely to lose mathematics skills and concepts over the summer. Practicing a few problems each week can help maintain these skills over the long summer months. The following links can help maintain math skills over the summer.
