College While in High School

Are you Interested in taking College Classes while you are still in High School? Well you've come to the right place!

We have some great information for you...

A Taste of College

“A Taste of College" was developed during the spring of 2001. It allows BHS students to take an elective in an area of interest that we do not offer here at Brookfield High School. The students take a college course at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC), in Waterbury, during the afternoon or evening. You may be able to receive both high school and college credit. Anyone interested, please see Ms. Troupe, in the School Counselors Office e as soon as possible.

Many classes have pre-requisites (courses that you must take prior to taking a particular class.) Also, before you can take a college math or English class at NVCC, you must take NVCC's placement test. Please allow time to schedule taking the test. Both are given on line. The math portion, you will get the results immediately, however the English part will take a few days for the writing to be analyzed. For a listing of courses and course descriptions log onto: http://www.nvcc.commnet.edu

We also have opportunities to take classes at Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) in Danbury, Connecticut. (You need a note from your guidance counselor giving you permission to take a class while still in high school.) http://www.wcsu.edu/

We will also accept other college courses that are taken on-line.

Tech Prep!

This is a national program that allows high school students to take articulated college courses on their own school campus. This means that the high school teacher is authorized to teach the high school course for dual credit—high school and college credit. There is no cost to the student for tuition or books and the courses are taught at the high school.

Currently, we have one articulated class with Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) in Winsted, CT (NCCC is the only two year college in the state that offers a major in Vet Tech.

The only four year school in the state that offers a Vet Tech degree is Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1022.xml

The NCCC/BHS course is “Introduction to Vet Tech” It is taught by Brookfield High School’s biology teacher, Dr. Kessler, who happens also to be a veterinarian.

This course is offered if there is enough demand, generally every other year. It was offered during Spring 2006 and will be offered Spring 2008, if there are enough students interested in taking the course.
