In the Brookfield Public Schools, we define Social Emotional Learning using the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL: https://casel.org/) definition, which was updated in October 2020 ( https://casel.org/sel-framework/ ):

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.

We are implementing the RULER approach Pre-K through Grade 12 to support the understanding and managing of emotions, help all members of our community set and achieve position goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

The State of Connecticut does not currently have SEL standards; however they have a "framework." Though the district has not "officially adopted" the CT Kindergarten through Grade 3 Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Habits Framework, the work done in our classrooms through the implementation of the RULER approach aligns with the framework.

It is anticipated that the CT State Department of Education will be extending the Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Habits Framework beyond Grades K-3.
